The focus of this IBM Redbook is to demonstrate, using example application workloads, various methods of using available IBM System i sizing and capacity planning tools to size IBM i5/OS partitions on an IBM System i5 configuration. The results should be a hardware and software configuration that meets the demands of a specific business application environment.

This book provides moderate level detailed information on using IBM and some non-IBM sizing and capacity planning tools for sizing workload consolidation and i5/OS logical partitioning on an IBM System i5 platform. The readers of this book must be familiar with IBM System i hardware configuration capabilities and overall i5/OS performance management capabilities. They must also have some base familiarity with sizing and capacity planning principles.

Using “case study” application workloads as examples, this book uses the capabilities of each product to do the sizing exercises. We also discuss, in overview format, the “things to do” to determine if your base performance information is sufficient to use for sizing activity.

The contents of this book cannot make you an expert in the art and science of sizing and capacity planning, nor an expert in the use of the tools described herein. Developing that expertise requires continuous experience both in managing the sizing process and the use of each of the tools.

Experience will dictate which tools to use and when to use combinations of the capabilities of these tools to provide the best possible sizing estimates and supporting documentation.
