Day One: Inside Junos Node Slicing

Understand, verify, and deploy Junos node slicing.

With the introduction of Junos node slicing, Juniper Networks offers the best virtualization solution for both control and data planes. Indeed, it’s quite well known that X86 CPUs are the best for routing protocol implementations, but they are very limited in terms of network packet processing input/output performances. With Junos node slicing, network engineers can take advantage of X86 capabilities for control plane applications, while, at the same time, continuing to enjoy TRIO programmable network processors benefits in terms of packet processing performances. This book goes inside to show you how to create and operate a Junos node slicing setup.

“Change begins at the end of the comfort zone and the Junos node slicing engineering team stepped out of their comfort zone and had no fear taking MX technology to the next level. Massimo did the same in this book. He stepped out of the comfort zone and had no fear in writing this excellent book that will help customers understand and deploy Junos node slicing technology. A great example of leadership and hard work.” – Javier Antich Romaguera, Product Line Manager, Automation Software Team, Juniper Networks

“You true believers in the no-compromise, brute performance, and power efficiency built on network ASICs may have felt a disturbance in the Force with “network slicing,” a wavering in your faith. Worry not! This book shows you how to surgically carve a physical router into “node slices,” each running its own version of the OS, administered by its own group, running its own protocols – advanced “CPU virtualization” for networking devices. Massimo Magnani makes the process easy with this step-by-step Day One book!” – Dr. Kireeti Kompella, SVP and CTO Engineering, Juniper Networks

IT’S DAY ONE AND YOU HAVE A JOB TO DO, SO LEARN ABOUT:
  • Junos node slicing architecture and how it works
  • How to install and set up a new Junos node slicing solution
  • Advanced topics such as Abstracted Fabric Interfaces and inter-GNF connectivity
  • How to correctly set up MX chassis and server to deploy Junos node slicing in a lab or a production environment
  • How to migrate an existing chassis to a Junos node slicing solution
  • How to design, deploy, and maintain Junos node slicing

About the Author
Massimo Magnani is a consulting engineer at Juniper Networks, where he works with many Italian operators on design, testing, and implementation of their networks. He started his IT career as Linux system administrator for the Tetrapak Sweden group in 1998, then fell in love with IP networking and started working for Blixer S.p.A., the first Italian IP covered provider in 2000, and then worked as system integrator in the Hewlett-Packard consulting department before joining Juniper Networks in 2008. Massimo then worked at Lutech S.p.A., Cisco Gold Partner and Juniper Networks Elite Partner, as a network engineer providing consultant services to many large enterprises and service providers. During this time he gained deep knowledge and experience on IP/MPLS, security, and switching technologies. He has always been a Linux enthusiast and an insane retro-gamer. He had the chance to be a Junos node slicing pioneer, and decided to become a Day One author.
