3746 Nways Controller Models 900 and 950: Multiaccess Enclosure Primer
IBM Redbooks

The 3746 Multiaccess Enclosure (MAE) is designed primarily to provide
a range of high-speed, high-availability connectivity options for the
3746 Nways Controller. It also offers new application-like
functionality and increased processing power to the 3746.
The MAE is a new extension to the existing 3746 hardware. It expands
the connectivity of the 3746 by offering eight new adapter slots.
These new adapters are based on the latest PCI technology and offer a
broad range of high-speed LAN capability (ATM LAN emulation client and
classical IP), increased traditional LAN interfaces (token-ring and
Ethernet), and cost-effective E1/T1 and low-speed
lines. The MAE also provides new ESCON and parallel channel adapters, ATM,
FDDI, HSSI, and Fast Ethernet. The MAE also supports APPN Session
Services Extensions (SSE), which allow the 3746 to function as a
network node server (NNS) for VTAM, and Extended Border Node.
Although primarily an APPN, HPR, APPN/DLUR, and IP router, it also
provides new application-like functionality such as DLSw support,
TN3270E Server, Network Dispatcher, and Enterprise Extender (HPR over
IP). The latest IBM channel protocol MPC+ is also implemented,
offering additional performance for channel-based IP and APPN traffic.
This redbook introduces the new integrated 3746 MAE. It explains the
various releases of the MAE, the prerequisites for installation of the
MAE, and the options available for the MAE. It explains how IP and
APPN have been implemented, and how to configure and manage the 3746
MAE. The book focuses on the integrated MAE which has a direct
attachment to the 3745 connectivity switch. References are made to the
previous version of the MAE to show where the two implementations
