A Roadmap for Deploying Domino in the Organization

This redbook is a guide for decision makers and technical people who need a thorough understanding of all aspects relating to a Lotus Domino R5 deployment in the organization. Most of the information covered in this book also applies to previous releases of Lotus Domino.

Part One introduces the issues that are important when evaluating and implementing a messaging and groupware product such as Lotus Domino. This includes defining what your organization wants and needs, and how Domino can help you accomplish your objectives.

Part Two looks at the technical evaluations and decisions you will need to make before deploying Domino in the organization. The chapters in Part Two discuss the importance of evaluating your current environment, and describe the key factors to consider when choosing a server and a client platform. Part Two finishes by presenting the stages involved in setting up a Notes/Domino pilot.

Part Three assumes that the decision has been taken to deploy Lotus Domino. This part takes you through the process of rolling out Domino in the organization. It shows you how to design hardware, messaging, calendaring, application, and client infrastructures and also provides details on the important topic of defining standards.

The following chapters in Part Three deal with the Internet side of Domino as well as with security concerns. In addition, an insight into training issues is given. Finally, Chapter 16 ties all of the preceding chapters together by discussing the creation of a rollout plan. Part Three ends by emphasizing the need for producing documentation throughout the deployment process.

Part Four explores the different aspects of managing your Notes/Domino environment once it has been established. This includes topics such as support and communications, Domino administration, monitoring and reporting, performance, contingency planning, and troubleshooting.

Part Five describes how to handle growth and change in the organization. It documents aspects relating to a hardware and software upgrade, before pointing to additional software packages that can help expand the reach of Domino. The last chapter explains what to watch out for when acquisitions or other circumstances require the merging of Domino infrastructures.
