Migrating Subarea Networks to an IP Infrastructure Using Enterprise Extender

The increased proliferation of the TCP/IP protocol suite in networking environments that have traditionally been subarea intensive has increased the need to maintain parallel networks. From an economic perspective, maintaining parallel networks is costly. It is therefore desirable to converge on a single networking infrastructure, yet maintain the functional operation of applications that have already been deployed. It is quite clear that the growth of the TCP/IP protocol suite leads to the conclusion that the Internet Protocol is this selected networking infrastructure. Furthermore, it is desirable to allow traditional subarea applications to still function in this environment.
This redbook describes a general framework to migrate entirely to IP as the single networking protocol in your environment. As a result, the cost and overhead in maintaining parallel networks are significantly reduced while preserving the networking infrastructure to support critical legacy applications.
This book presents an overview of the SNA and TCP/IP protocols and of the different techniques used to carry legacy subarea traffic over an IP network. These techniques are compared, leading to the justification of Enterprise Extender as the protocol integration mechanism of choice. This book introduces a migration strategy and illustrates its usefulness with a working scenario highlighting the most important aspects of configuration and interoperation. Finally, different techniques are discussed for improving overall system performance.
