Colliding with History: African American Works on Paper from the Collection of Wes and Missy Cochran
Rebecca Dimling Cochran
ADD TO CART
For more than 30 years, Wes and Missy Cochran collected works on paper by contemporary African American artists. The unassuming couple he a stonemason and she a teacher traveled from their home in La Grange, Georgia throughout the United States where, with the help of notable figures like Camille Billops, Bob Blackburn, and Corrine Jennings, they were introduced to the important artists of the day. Few of these artists were represented by galleries at the time, so the Cochrans visited their homes and studios and developed lasting personal relationships with many along the way.
Their collection is a who’s who of late 20th and early 21st century artists from Hale Woodruff, Elizabeth Catlett and Romare Beardon, to Mel Edwards, Howardena Pindell, Sam Gilliam, Alma Thomas and Betye Saar. While most of their works are in the form of prints monotypes, lithographs, silkscreen and etching for artists not working in these mediums they bought drawings collage and acrylics on paper. Figuration was very popular when the Cochrans began collecting in the late 80s, particularly images that celebrated African American life or made political commentary, but the Cochrans were equally drawn to works by artists experimenting with abstraction and both strains are represented in the collection.
This catalog accompanied an exhibition of the same name that featured more than 70 works from the Cochran Collection on view at the Welch School Galleries at Georgia State University from September 13 November 12, 2021. The 89-page soft-bound catalog contains full-color plates of all the works in the exhibition as well as an interview with the collectors by the exhibitions curator, Rebecca Dimling Cochran, and an essay by Cynthia Hawkins, PhD.
