Day One: Introduction to SRv6

SRv6 is a segment routing paradigm applied to an IPv6 underlay with a new IPv6 extension header called Segment Routing Header (SRH). While SR-MPLS for IPv4 and IPv6 underlay does not require any change in the forwarding plane, SRv6 requires forwarding plane support to process the newly defined extension header. SRv6 uses IPv6 addresses to represent transport endpoints as well as service instances such as Virtual Private Networks (VPN). This brings in an unique advantage because these service instance identifiers can be advertised as prefixes. It also has the advantage that these service instance identifiers can be easily summarized and improve scalability. In SRv6, the transit routers, which are not anchor points, use simple IPv6 forwarding and this ability makes SRv6 much simpler to migrate the networks. SRv6 also has network programming ability. The large IPv6 address space provides flexibility to encode instructions in the destination address. This capability is attractive to cloud networking use cases.

This Day One book will take you through the basics of SRv6 and a detailed description of configuring SRv6 on Junos. The authors cover all the supported features in SRv6 until the 22.3 release. Previous knowledge of basic Segment Routing features such as TI-LFA, Flexible- Algorithms, and SR-TE will greatly help as you cruise through this book.

IT’S DAY ONE AND YOU HAVE A JOB TO DO:
  • Understand the basics of SRv6
  • Configure basic SRv6 transport and services
  • Learn advanced features like TI-LFA, micro-loop avoidance, and SR-TE
  • Deploy SRv6 for various use cases
  • Troubleshoot SRv6

“This book takes you step-by-step all the way from the basic principles of SRv6 to advanced topics such as micro-loop avoidance and SRv6-MPLS interworking. It’s accompanied by detailed configuration examples and router outputs. It’s an invaluable reference to network architects, engineers and net-ops alike.” Julian Lucek, Sr Distinguished Systems Engineer, Juniper Networks
