Integrating Java with Existing Data and Applications on OS/390

This redbook gives you a comprehensive overview of how to get started with
Java in an OS/390 Server environment.

Java is not just a new language, but a whole new concept of running your
applications. Not only Java as a new language, but also involving the Internet
as the user interface for your new or existing applications brings some
challenges you need to prepare for.

Actually, using Java as a new programming language and running it on OS/390
is not really the issue. The issue is to carefully (re-)design your application,
making use of new technologies at the right place and at the right time, keeping
in mind your application requirements.

We strongly believe that Java and the Web together give a tremendous variety
in implementing new-style applications. This is also true for an OS/390 Server
environment. IBM's policy regarding Java on OS/390 is to stay in step with
Sun's releases of Java. This, along with the availability of Java connectors for
all major OS/390 subsystems and the Web-enablement Services of OS/390,
gives the OS/390 user all the possibilities of using Java and the Web, even
re-using existing data and transactions.

In this redbook we give you a top-down view of the implications of incorporating
Java and the Web into your OS/390 environment. We divided the book into
5 parts:
Part 1. An Introduction to Java and OS/390:
In this part we give an actual overview of Java in general, its strengths and how
Java applies to OS/390. To read this chapter, it is not required to have any
technical knowledge in this area.

Part 2. Java Application Architectures for OS/390:
Every reader should read this part, as it gives the big picture. Defining your
application architecture is a necessary step, since there are so many ways to
implement your application.

In this part, and really in the entire redbook, there is a strong emphasis on
integration. In most cases, a new Java--or--Web application will be using
existing data or programs on OS/390. We therefore outline all currently
available Java-connectors.

Part 3. Java Application Development for OS/390:
In this part we explain that you do not need to develop your Java code on the
runtime platform. Because of the highly portable character of Java, you can do
all the development work, including compilation, on a workstation and at the end,
move it to OS/390.

Part 4. Running Java on OS/390:
In this part we give more technical information about running Java on OS/390.

It includes the JDK installation, ASCII/EBCDIC character set considerations,
servlets and many more. We also included a general section about security.

Part 5. Examples of Integrating Java with Existing Data and Applications:
This part of the book is quite technical and includes all the details of using the
Java-connectors for CICS, IMS, MQ and DB2. We also give examples of
reading/writing MVS datasets. Most of the examples are supplied softcopy
with this redbook.

This redbook will not be the last one about Java and OS/390. Early 1999,
we expect to publish a second redbook, including new DB2, IMS and CICS
support for Java, a new VisualAge for Java with more OS/390 Enterprise Beans,
High Performance Java (HPJ) and performance considerations.
