Given the complexity of multisystem environments, it is no longer possible to
effectively manage systems manually. Several practical examples are
presented to demonstrate how CICS, NetView, IBM SystemView Automated
Operations Control/MVS (AOC/MVS), AOC/MVS CICS Automation Feature, CICSPlex
SM, and the MVS Automatic Restart Manager (ARM) can be used to automate the
operation of CICS systems in an MVS environment.

CICSPlex SM and ARM were used to detect and recover from a stalled condition.

CICSPlex SM and NetView were used to detect a short-on-storage condition and
automatically allocate more storage to the region. CICSPlex SM was used to
detect that a CICS resource was not in the expected state and automatically
correct it. Guidance is provided to help system programmers and operations
staff use the products to automate the operation of CICS systems. Overview
information is provided to help systems operation and program managers decide
which set of products is most appropriate for their needs.

The automation products tested work together to dramatically reduce the need
for human intervention in CICS operation. CICSPlex SM is the cornerstone of
the automation process for CICS. It provides an effective mechanism for
detecting abnormal situations in the operation of CICS regions, passing
information to the other automation products for remedial action.
