Parallel Sysplex - Managing Software for Availability

This redbook provides a methodology for validating your software management strategy, and provides some specific recommendations, based on your business and technical requirements. It then discusses how to set up the infrastructure required to implement that strategy in as efficient a manner as possible.

After deciding on a strategy and how to implement it, the book then goes through the major products--OS/390, CICS, DB2, IMS, and Communications Server/390--and lists the Parallel Sysplex availability features of each product, and how it can be used to provide the change windows required to implement your strategy. It also discusses other availability and management features of the products, and lists any considerations that are unique to that product.

Parallel Sysplex is a vital component of high availability, and this book assumes that you have implemented it, or plan to do so in the near future. However, many of the methodologies included in this book apply equally to non-Parallel Sysplex customers as well.

The target audience for this book is system programmers responsible for the software management strategy in medium-sized installations, that is, those with between 2 and 15 systems. However, the bulk of the recommendations will also apply to larger and smaller installations.

This book was developed in response to customer requests for guidance on how to meet the conflicting requirements of keeping software up to date, while at the same time delivering increasing levels of availability.
