Introducing Tivoli Distributed Monitoring Workbench 4.1

With Tivoli Manager for Windows NT Version 3.7, Tivoli introduced a new programming tool called Workbench for creating, debugging, and packaging new resource models for Windows NT. Resource models may be regarded as Common Information Model based monitoring collections with built-in capabilities for event analysis, aggregation, and logging. They are used to collect and analyze data regarding the state of different resources, such as disks, memory, CPU, or applications.

In Tivoli Distributed Monitoring 4.1 Advanced Edition, this functionality has been extended to include execution on UNIX operating systems, and, in addition, a number of significant functional enhancements has been added.

This IBM Redbook covers the Workbench in detail to help the seasoned, CIM knowledgeable professionals implement a sophisticated monitoring solution in customer environments using Windows or UNIX resource models. There are many practical guidelines, best practices, tips and techniques, and scenarios for you to design and create efficient resource models to monitor your environment.

In some cases, you may want to create your own CIM classes in addition to the ones provided by operating system, hardware, and application program vendors. In this redbook, you will find guidelines on how to create new CIM classes for use in your resource models.
