IBM System Storage DS8000 Series: Copy Services in Open Environments

In today’s highly competitive and real-time environment the ability to manage all IT needs on a 24 hours a day and 7 days per week basis makes the considerations for the creation of copies and backups a core requirement for any IT deployment. Furthermore, many clients believe there is a real need to more pro-actively provide for disaster recovery, and the Copy Services functions available on IBM TotalStorage DS8000 can form part of these strategies.

Particularly in the open systems environment, Copy Services functions can provide immediate copies of data, and make it available to other applications or systems. In effect, this creates a snapshot of the data stored at any given time, now known as a Point-in-Time Copy. Copy Services can also provide local or remote copies for data retention and disaster recovery purposes. These functions are now known as Metro Mirror, Global Mirror, and Global Copy. This IBM Redbook also covers the 3-site Metro/Global Mirror with Incremental Resync feature and introduces the TotalStorage Productivity Center for Replication solution.

DS8000 Advanced Copy Services functions can be utilized across the DS8000, DS6000, and some models of the ESS family, and there are new tools to enable the easier management of these different storage platforms.
