This IBM Redbook offers a broad understanding of DFSMStvs. It includes an introductory presentation that describes what transactional VSAM is and how it provides new opportunities for sharing data between batch jobs and CICS. These opportunities enable the batch window to be substantially reduced, if not eliminated, for data accessed by CICS or by batch jobs.

DFSMStvs is an optional feature of the DFSMS component of z/OS 1.4, and it offers the ability for VSAM data to be shared for both read and write operations while maintaining integrity and recoverability. DFSMStvs adds the ability to log changes to recoverable VSAM data sets and for batch programs to use commit and backout functions.
