Implementing VisualGen Client/Server Communications
IBM Redbooks
ADD TO CART
The VisualGen product set includes support for development,
generation, and execution of stand-alone and client/server systems.
VisualGen client/server systems can support GUI client applications on
OS/2 and Windows platforms and text client applications on OS/2 and
AIX platforms. These GUI and text clients can access servers on OS/2,
CICS OS/2, AIX, and host CICS systems.
VisualGen client/server communications support provides multiple
connectivity options between GUI and text client applications and
called server applications. Communication protocols based on Named
Pipes, TCP/IP, APPC/LU6.2, LU2, and CICS allow GUI and text clients to
call generated server applications on the supported server system
platforms.
This document provides an overview of the VisualGen product set and an
introduction to VisualGen client/server communications support. The
available client/server configuration options and examples of
client/server communications support definitions for several of the
configurations are used to demonstrate the flexibility of
client/server with VisualGen.
A discussion of the implementation issues related to the use of
VisualGen for development and runtime support of a client/server
system includes several recommendations on how to approach the design,
development, and implementation of a robust client/server system.
Related client/server issues such as ASCII to EBCDIC conversion.
logical unit of work management options, and performance are discussed.
