How Smyth Sewn Binding Is Made
Many books are bound with PUR adhesive, a strong, flexible glue that produces an excellent, durable book. PUR binding opens well, but it does not lay completely flat the way a Smyth sewn layflat book does.
Smyth sewn binding takes a different approach. The interior is printed in signatures, which are small sections of roughly 16 pages each. Each signature is folded and then sewn through the fold with durable thread, and the sewn signatures are joined and reinforced at the spine before the book is cased into its hardcover. Because the pages are stitched together, the book lays completely flat, stays open on its own, and the pages stay put through years of use.
